This flyer highlights the importance of credible carbon governance in Riau Province as a foundation for sustainable development and Jurisdictional REDD+ implementation. It explains how Riauโ€™s forests and peatlands play a vital role in storing carbon, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and supporting sustainable development, while also facing challenges such as deforestation, land degradation, forest and land fires, and land-use change.

The document outlines key actions supported by the GREEN for Riau Initiative, including regulatory analysis, legal risk mitigation, strengthening carbon governance, and improving regional policies. These efforts aim to enhance legal certainty, protect community rights, clarify stakeholder roles and responsibilities, and promote internationally recognized principles such as Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV), nesting, environmental and social safeguards, Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and benefit sharing.

Through credible carbon governance, GREEN for Riau supports stronger cross-sector coordination, transparent and accountable carbon governance, fair and inclusive benefit-sharing mechanisms, improved access to carbon finance and Results-Based Payments (RBP), and stronger protection of community rights. This approach contributes to a greener, more sustainable future for Riau through inclusive, collaborative, and environmentally responsible forest and peatland management.
